HOW TO MAKE A DIY FRAME FOR ANY SIZED ARTWORK- ORC WEEK 5

A scratch world map hanging on a taupe wall with walnut slats at the top and bottom as a frame.

This week has been a busy one so, for this One Room Challenge post, I knew I needed to show you all a quick and simple DIY project! And it really was a simple one!! We have had this scratch map a long time. For us, we scratch off any countries we have both been to and I love it! Having a world map in the dining room also leads to lots of interesting conversations and I’ve been wanting to hang it there for ages. The only problem is the size is a bit irregular and getting a custom frame would be expensive. I also didn’t want any glass so it would be easy to scratch off countries as we go…wishful thinking!! 🙂 So my only option was to create a DIY frame!

A scratch map of the world with some countries scratched off.

Step 1

I got the inspiration for this DIY frame from a H&M one that wasn’t available in the size I wanted. I started off with two pieces of moulding ,similar to this, that I bought in BnQ. Before cutting them, I taped them together. Then I cut them together, so that the edges would be exactly the same.

Two slats masking taped together.

Step 2

When I had four slats of same length cut, it was time to stain them. I used a Ronseal walnut stain and it needed a three coats to get the colour I wanted. I used a piece of an old sponge to apply it…no washing up needed!

Four pine slats. One slat was stained walnut.

Step 3

To attach the scratch map, I stapled it to the back slats, cutting off a little at the bottom to make it symmetrical. There was a little bit of residue left on the map after scratching areas off, but these cleaned up nicely with some vinegar. I then glued the front slats on and voilá, a finished frame! The room was painted 7 days ago, which meant just enough time had passed that I could use command strips to hang it. What do you think?

Join me next week for an Ikea Besta hack which I think will be gorgeous!!! The time is flying by for this challenge…only three more weeks until the final reveal!!!! Have you seen how so far I have built radiator covers, re-stained our dining table and painted the walls in the most stunning neutral? Check out the One Room Challenge blog to see how everyone is going. There are over 300 participants, so you’re spoilt for choice!
