One Room Challenge Update on the Utility Room Makeover, Weeks 4-7

Yep, you read that right…it’s been a month since I’ve updated you on how the utility room makeover is going. That’s pretty much because not much happened last month. Renovations just go that way I think. It’s been a huge month in the kitchen though!!! We had countertops, sink, hob, lighting, skirting and architraves installed and all the doors downstairs hung. Now you know why the utility room was pushed aside for a while, but it’s getting all the attention it deserves from now on!

Next week is the official reveal of the One Room Challenge but you’ll see from the to-do list, that it probably won’t be ready just yet. My guest room reveal was a bit delayed for last year’s challenge too, so that’s a reminder that it’s ok if it takes a bit longer. There was a pandemic going on after all!

So, what did happen this week?

Part of the utility room makeover was to ensure there was as much storage as possible. We kept the storage units from the old utility room and this week a friend of ours installed them back in. I’m so excited to get this all filled up and lessen the chaos somewhat upstairs!! Ha ha! You can see we even have a space on one side for the ironing board. I primed and painted the edges of the units and I have to give the doors one more coat before I hang them.

I removed the old kitchen tile from the walls and I must patch a few holes as the chisel created quite a few dents! I’m pretty glad there’s wallpaper going on there now as it will be much more forgiving than paint. The sample arrived for the wallpaper and it’s stunning. It’s all ordered to I’m hoping it arrives soon!!

Finally, you saw at the beginning, we got the coolest utility light ever installed!!! I love the vintage bulb and the colour I’ve chosen for the ceiling will be amazing against it!

Ready for the longest to-do list?

Paint the ceiling and the walls. I’m painting the ceiling a rust colour and you know me…I have, of course, chosen a shade of paint that is proving difficult to find! But in my head it’s going to be gorgeous as there’s a hint of rust in the wallpaper too. I’m hoping ‘Heat’ by the Little Greene Paint Company is it! The walls are going to be white.

We are getting a free countertop from a friend so when that arrives we’ll be able to install the gold tap I bought and our old utility room sink…which needs quite a cleanup actually! The gold tap was one of the three kitchen taps I found under €40, I linked them all in this post and they’re an absolute steal!

I want to use some of the leftover timber around the place to make two simple wooden shelves for above the sink. I’m going to stain them a dark walnut, very similar to the picture below, but possibly with gold brackets.

I must build a cover for the boiler that still allows it to be acessible. I mentioned before that I have an idea for this and I’m still hoping I can achieve it!

Finally, there are lots of baskets, plants and other decor to add to the room. So you can see why I’m not quite sure we’ll get it finished next week, but here’s hoping!! And don’t forget to check out all the other participants that are much further along in the challenge than me!! There are even a few reveals this week…I’m in total awe!
