My first One Room Challenge is complete!!! What should have been a six week challenge did indeed turn into nine weeks, so the relief writing this reveal post is unbelievable! My goal was to completely makeover our single bed guestroom and turn it into a double. My moodboard showed a room that was cheerful, colourful and fun and I’m thrilled with the result! Let’s have a quick recap on what the room looked like in the beginning.
Boring, unloved and definitely cluttered. Looking back on these pictures, I cannot believe the change!!
The first thing I did was paint the walls a beautiful mustard colour called Torc by Colourtrend. I fell in love with it immediately. It’s a pretty intense colour so I only painted it on the lower three quarters of the wall. This stopped it from becoming overbearing while allowing it to still give the wow factor. I love that little stripe I added on the back of the door.
A proper guest room has to sleep two people so turning this built in bed base into a double was essential. I love the walnut stain and I couldn’t believe how easy it was to create a real wood look out of MDF!
I dreamed of a luxurious headboard but anything I found was completely out of our budget. What must one do, only DIY it!! I used 1000 staples creating this headboard but it was worth every single one! It has the added benefit of doing a great job of hiding the wire and switch of the wall lights. Ideal!
The shape of the light pendant is so similar to the palm tree bedcovers. I’d love to say it was all planned but nope. A wonderful coincidence! I didn’t even notice the pink tassels until I dressed the bed – love those surprises, don’t you?! Because the bedcovers have such a large, loud pattern I knew the window dressing would need to be simple and monochromatic. Of course, I couldn’t find what I wanted so it was time to DIY my own. I swear life would be so much simpler if Google could just read my mind!! (My next post will be a tutorial about how I made it, so watch out!) I do love how it turned out and I think it complements the bedcovers nicely!
My mother actually painted this watercolour painting!!! Isn’t it just amazing!! She was painting it over the Christmas and when I was visiting, I completely fell in love and demanded that it should be mine!! 🙂 It now takes pride of place in this room! The second-hand mirror you see was originally gold in colour. However, it seemed to almost blend into the yellow background so I spray painted it silver. That fabulous velvet stool was bought in Aldi for half the price I saw anywhere else. A total steal and it matches the headboard perfectly! (It’s not for sale online but I did find a similar one here)
What is it about a pretty basket planter that seems to make a room?! I love this one I bought in TKMaxx. What’s best is that everyone is staring at the pretty basket and not noticing that the plant inside is on its last legs. Like every other plant in this house!!!
I’m absolutely in love with how the room looks. The One Room Challenge was fantastic for motivation and encouragement. Would I do it again? If I could make every decision beforehand – most definitely! But I’ve realised now that I like to take my time when designing. Make a decision, see how it affects the rest of the room and then make the next decision. I feel much more confident doing it this way but perhaps that’s just inexperience. Who knows – I could be a complete genius at six week challenges in a few years time!!
