After years of watching bloggers create amazing designs in the One Room Challenge, I cannot believe I now get to create my own! The One Room Challenge is an event where 20 featured designers makeover a room in six weeks and write a post about it weekly. Anyone can become guest participant in the challenge, transforming a room and posting about the progress weekly. It’s a fantastic opportunity to find new, inspiring blogs.
I only registered for this challenge last week and this room was not something I was going to tackle anytime soon. A few days ago I had no idea how I was going to design this space. Let me give you an insight into how I created this moodboard.
What atmosphere do I want to create?
This is always the first thing I do when designing a room. How do I want to feel when I’m in the space? Cozy, romantic, formal? Or maybe calm like our master bedroom. This time I wanted my room to be cheerful, colourful and fun. Immediately certain colours come to mind and I’m planning on having lots of quirky items dotted around the room. From now on, any decorating decisions I make, must have this atmosphere in mind. Cheerful, colourful and fun.
Functional layout
Regardless of how well a colour scheme is put together, it must be a priority that the room functions well. Will my guests be able to hang some clothes? Where will they put their bags? Can they charge their phones overnight? Guests are going to remember those things, perhaps more than the paint colours on the wall. My room is very small and to be honest there wasn’t a whole lot of options when it came to where the bed is going to be. Everything has been measured so I know a double bed will indeed be able to fit in, just about. Phew!
Inspiration Pics
Aren’t these just divine??? I love the mix of colours in both rooms and I’m drooling over that velvet headboard. I’m thinking of possibly DIYing one for this project. Both of these rooms have plain white walls, which I totally agree gives a good background to the splash of colours. But I cannot get the idea of yellow walls out of my head so hopefully I won’t be regretting that decision!
Create a Moodboard
- A navy velvet upholstered headboard would be gorgeous with that bedspread. A beautiful one like this isn’t really in the budget so hopefully I’ll be able to DIY one.
- The first decision I made was to paint the walls yellow. Risky yes, but it’s a guest room so I’m allowed to be risky! I haven’t chosen the exact colour yet as I’m waiting for the bedspread to be delivered. That way I’m sure the colours will match.
- These pineapple bedsheets screamed fun when I first saw them. They convey the exact feeling I want in this room. Not only that but they were a bargain at under €30.
- Lamps are a must in any bedroom but space is very tight here. In fact, there will only be 26cm on either side of the mattress. My solution is to create a little shelf to place books or charge phones and then have wall lights above. These white funky ones look so much more expensive than what they actually are.
- I think faux plants are the way to go in a guest room. Real plants just wither and die as I’m not in that room often enough to remember watering them! This happens to other people too yeah?!
- There’s a little space just inside the door that I’m thinking would fit a bench nicely. It would be great if I could find one with storage that could hold extra blankets etc. If I can’t find a brightly coloured one like this one, this could be another DIY project!

Let me just give you a few quick before pictures so you know what I’m dealing with! This small room has clearly become a bit of a dumping ground. It’s mostly empty boxes that I was keeping to help organise whatever survived ‘Spark Joy’! My job this coming week will be to clear everything out and start painting. I also need to start buying most of the items needed for this challenge to make sure that everything works well together. Wish me luck!
