18 OF MY FAVOURITE FIREPITS IN IRELAND- PLUS MY TOP TIPS WHEN CHOOSING ONE!

Do you remember me warning you that all the good garden furniture gets sold out in April? (If not, go back and check out my garden sofa or garden dining chair post!) Well today, I’m giving you everything you need to choose firepits in Ireland! I’ve bought ours already, so you know I’ve done a ton of research! 🙂 I’ll tell you at the end which one I’ve bought…I wonder can you guess as you read through?!

First up – A Few Tips

1. Grab some chalk, go outside and draw the best sized firepit for your garden. The last thing you want is one too big, that’s difficult to walk around safely.
2. If you have a wood burning firepit, make sure your timber is dry and untreated.
3. Be aware that metal firepits can rust over time.
4. Decide from the beginning if cooking food over the firepit is important to you. Some firepits aren’t suitable.
5. If you’re worried about damaging the ground underneath, get a firepit with legs.
6. If you’re buying a gas firepit and you’re looking for good heat, check the BTU’s in the description. It ranges between 30,000- 100,000 BTU. The higher the number, the more heat – but that also means it uses more fuel!
7. Keep the firepit low to the ground (about 50cm off the ground) to heat those sitting around it better.

Types of Firepits

Fire Column or Chiminea

• These are ideal for small gardens and the higher chimney means smoke is carried away from the seating area faster.

This modern chiminea is my favourite!

Metal, Wood Burning Firepit

• Usually easily portable, can be turned into a grill, inexpensive, can rust over time, authentic (think timber crackling, embers and smell that you just don’t get from a gas fire)

Brick Firepit

A brick firepit is a traditional looking firepit that is low maintenance and looks well. It can be used as a grill too and can be cheaper as it’s popular to DIY it. If you do fancy building one yourself, The Family Handyman has a good tutorial with each step broken down clearly.

Table Firepit

• Good if you’re short on space. Looks luxurious, but it comes with a high price tag.

Gas Firepit

• Easy to use. Looks well. No smoke (if that’s your thing!) Can be expensive.

Which One Did I Choose?

So many stunning firepits in Ireland, of every variety here. But there was one clear winner for me and I bet you’re going to be surprised! I knew we wanted a gas firepit as I wanted to be able to walk out to the garden and have instant heat with no mess! Plus, because we live in an estate, I didn’t want to annoy neighbours with smoke everytime we wanted a fire. As you see above, gas firepits can be very expensive.

We are on a tight budget for the garden, so I chose the Outland Living Firepit (number 6 above). It has amazing reviews on every website it’s mentioned on and the heat output is very high – perfect for cold creatures like me! Now, I’ll be the first to admit that the design isn’t the most modern or aesthetically pleasing to me, but I have a plan to sort that…I think! When I have it figured out properly, I’ll let you know!
